What is Reiki?
Reiki is a form of energy healing. In other words, as I described in my article on “What is Energy Healing?”, it is essentially a therapeutic modality that seeks to restore health by working on the energetic body of individuals.
The beauty of Reiki is that it is one of the simplest forms of energy work around and is thus one of the easiest ways for people to learn basic healing work and immediately start using it in their lives with friends, family and even pets!
This is also probably the reason why Reiki has spread so quickly all around the world and is by far the mostly widely known energy healing modality.
There are many different variants of Reiki, but if you gloss over the differences that exist between the different systems, styles and lineages of Reiki, it is without a doubt also the most widely used form of energy healing on the planet today.
So how does Reiki work? And how does it compare with other energy healing modalities?
From the perspective of the person receiving Reiki, in a typical session, one would lie down on a healing table and then the Reiki practitioner would lay down his hands gently on one?s body and transmit healing energies. Traditionally, Reiki practitioners start with their hands at the head and then work their way down to the feet.
Additionally, it is worth noting that unlike some other energy healing modalities, Reiki is primarily hands on. There are healing modalities which are primarily hands off, in which case the healer works on the aura without touching the physical body. And there are modalities which use techniques that are both hands on and hands off.
But in the case of Reiki, the healer will rarely work hands off the body unless there are specific reasons for that such as the client feeling physically or psychologically uncomfortable by being touched in that area of their body.
So what makes Reiki special or unique?
The main advantage of Reiki is truly how easy it is for anyone to learn. Some energy healing modalities take years to learn and even more years to master. But Reiki, at least in the way it is taught in the West, is a modality that one can learn and immediately start using after just one weekend of training!
The only thing you need to do to start giving your own Reiki treatments is to sign up for a weekend workshop with a Reiki master of your choice. The Reiki master will then teach you a sequence of hand positions to be followed when working on a client.
And more importantly, you will receive a Reiki attunement.
This is how Reiki is passed from one generation of practitioners to the next. As the word suggests, there is some kind of tuning process going on. An analogy you can think of is that of tuning a musical instrument with the aid of a tuning fork. The Reiki master transmits a specific frequency of energy to the Reiki student.
This opens up certain energetic channels in the student, which allows the student to be able to synthesize the same sort of healing frequencies as the master. I suspect that different lineages of Reiki probably transmit slightly different frequencies, but overall the attunement process guarantees that there is a fairly consistent range of healing frequencies that all Reiki healers are able to deliver.
Having said this, each Reiki healer you go to is going to provide you with a slightly different experience based on their own quirks, personality traits and qualities. Thus, if you do go so a Reiki healer choose one that suits you!
